In recent years, the term “cloud” is often mentioned in the mass media as a technological revolution on the Internet. Cloud Storage is one of the most popular “cloud” services today. This article will analyzes and suggest some ways to use free cloud storage service efficiently and safely.

What is cloud storage?

Cloud storage is a hosting service (or backup) for data in devices that users do not know the real address (as “clouds”). Users can explore, upload, download, synchronize data from anywhere with Internet.

The original target of Internet is the connection with researchers and their computers together to share information effectively. For the technology “cloud”, users are dependent on physical storage devices such as memory disks, CD …no longer and they can get access from anywhere with Internet. However, this depends on Internet and providers for cloud storage service.
There are two important characteristics making cloud storage different from other storage types: (i) users cannot determine the actual address of services; (ii) the users can synchronize all data in anywhere with Internet.

Is it free and safe?

Currently, there are a lot of providers of cloud storage service with policies on different price and security modes. Regarding to the price, the majority offer free packages alongside  attached paid services such as increasing storage capacity, data access programs on a computer or handheld device … Regarding to the security, there are many services without  guarantee (or unclear provisions) privacy mode for free users. This is important point for users who need to store documents should have a policy to make sure safety in terms of content and copyright as well as scientific works, reports, contracts … The reason given by suppliers for this inconvenience is that they need to control contents to manage the storage system and prevent cases of malicious damages (virus) uploaded by users.

To ensure individual rights, users should read carefully the terms (terms of use, terms of agreement) under the provisions of each service and you have to have specific questions for security issues not clearly specified in the terms or use the instructions as described in the following section.
