Step by step – How to install VMWare ESX 4.0

This tutorial is to show you step-by-step with screenshots of how to install VMWare ESX 4.0 on a server. I will install ESX in graphical mode. The overall process is just exactly the same with installing a new Linux OS.

  1. Boot up the server with Installation DVD downloaded from VMWare.com
  2. Select Install ESX in graphical mode, and press ENTER

  3. Click Next
  4. Accept the License Agreement, and click Next
  5. Select U.S English as the default keyboard, click Next
  6. Select No for not to install any custom drivers because I have no special drivers for this server

  7. Click Next
  8. Click Yes to answer the message of loading system drivers.
  9. Wait for the Loading Drivers to 100% finished, click Next
  10. I will leave the License Number blank, and will enter it later using vCenter Server, Click Next. If you have a good license number, feel free to enter it here.License - leave it blank
  11. Select a Network adapter for ESX to use for system management, such as SSH.Selecting a NIC for VMWare ESX
  12. Click Next
